Listening To The Human Brain - The Sonification Of Complex Brain Activity

Gerold Baier, Biophysics, Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos, Mexico

The investigation of the activity of the human brain is - like most other research - performed primarily by means of visual data representation. For multiple complex events occurring in parallel in the time domain this may not always be optimal. Here I propose to apply recent techniques of data sonification to deal with multivariate EEG/MEG time series via auditory displays. I present sonification strategies exemplified with epileptic electroencephalogram (EEG) and discuss how listening to the sounds offers a new approach to the dynamic complexity in the human brain.
